What are some reasons why McCain flipped his opinion on offshore drilling?
•Public opinion
•National security will depend on having our own energy sources. Oil is only one source
•Because the price of gas and oil doubled since he last said he was against it
•Also to reduce our dependence on the mid east
•when gasoline closed in on $3+ a gallon and diesel was close to $4 a gallon.
New developments often mean a reassessment of one’s initial opinions.
•Oil money for his campaign
•when the republican strategists told him it’s a good idea to get votes.
•Rational
•Energy independence
•Public pressure, more votes
•Alternative energy
•Score political points and gain votes from people/businesses that are most affected by the high gas price
•New energy policy, weaning itself from foreign oil
I have no idea why, i need clear accurate reasons, serious answers please, these are merely ideas i’ve found around the internet, i need a clear cut answer.
We can only assume things. You will have to ask him. I think it was probably a combinatin of the reasons you list. I was also against more offshore or North slope drilling but am gradually beginning to think we will have to do more drilling in those areas, since we don’t seem to be able to cut our usage much or find good alternatives. In any case this drilling will take years to pay off, and probably not solve the problem or reduce prices very much. All OPEC has to do to raise prices is cut their production. I read recently that we have 3% of the reserves and use 25% of the oil. Do you think that any amount of drilling will make us independent on foreign oil? I’m afraid not.
