How Would Our Country Be Different If the Alternative Energy Initiatives of The Carter Administration Had Not?
been shelved when Ronald Reagan took office.
One program under Carter was the “gas o hol” program of blending gasoline with alcohol, much like the ethanol of today.
This program was killed as soon as Reagan took office at the insistence of the oil companies.
Other energy independence projects were to harness the tidal flows into electricity and this program was also cut under Reagan.
Had these and other measures had been continued, how would they effect how we live today?
And please answer the question in an intelligent manner and not use your answer to senselessly bash President Carter.

Personally, I don’t think it would have made a whole lot of difference.
Oil was cheap.
For the American people to accept the investment into alternative energy, would have required people to get over there short range view of the American economy. The outlook at the time, was that it was very expensive and it was years away. Look how fast they returned to oil, once the embargo was over and supplies returned. There was no comparison.
I have said this before. The transformation to other sources of energy will happen when individuals, and the public as a whole decides that it is necessary. Forcing it down the people throat will not work.
The transition from wood to coal happened because of the people.

Considering gas has 50 times the energy of ethanol, find the decent replacement. That is what the people need.
