ALTERNATIVE ENERGY HOUSE DESIGN
Designing with alternative energy sources.?

I’m designing a house powered exclusively by alternative energy sources, like Geothermal, Hydroelectric, Wind, or Solar. Can anybody throw ideas around?

Energy-efficient house design starts with very basic considerations, like the site to be built on and how to locate the house to get the best solar advantage. To minimize the amount of energy needed, you should incorporate passive-solar features into basic house design, such as 1) large south-facing windows with roof overhangs that shade in summer but allow in winder sun; 2) heat-retaining thermal mass (walls, floors, etc); and 3) deciduous trees to the south, evergreen trees around the north of the house. Next, your construction should include hyper-insulation, maximum use of natural light, and similar techniques to minimize energy usage.

After all that, THEN you can worry about alternative energy sources. A great idea is groundwater-linked heat pump. But if you use enough passive and active solar features, and if you’re in a sunny and moderate climate, you may not need the heat pump!

An energy-conscious architect can help a lot with the basics that come BEFORE you consider what to use for energy supply.
