Can a stream support a micro hydro system?
I am looking into alternative energy sources, and micro hydro seems to be, in my opinion, the forerunner in overall cost and power output . I am hoping that a stream with a continuous flow can provide output for all household appliances-big and small. Is this possible?
You have two things to work with: Head and total flow
A stream has no head, so you’re stuck with flow.
About the best you can do with this arrangement is an undershot waterwheel. These are low on rotational speed, but high on torque, allowing you to extract a reasonable amount of power if you have sufficient flow.
I know of a person near where I live who runs an undershot wheel in a stream and is able to get close to 2 kw out of it. The number of 2 kw is important because a continuous 2 kw can do a very respectable job of powering a house.
His wheel is reasonably sized. IIRC, it is about 8 ft tall and 4-5 ft wide. I don’t remember how deep the buckets are.
