Energy Saving Light Bulbs?
Is it cheaper to leave an energy saving lightbulb on continously for 4 hours or turn an ordinary lightbulb on and off 3 or 4 times in that 4 hours?
It mostly depends how long the bulb runs for.
The usual 100 W-equivalent compact fluorescent takes about 22 watts. If you run the CF for 4 hours, it will consume 88 watt-hours of energy. If you run the 100 W incandescent lightbulb for less than 0.88 hours (52.8 minutes, or 13.2 minutes per hour), it will be cheaper to operate than the CF.
There is another factor at work here: turning an incandescent bulb on and off heats it and cools it very rapidly, causing “thermal shock”. This decreases its lifespan. You’ll replace the lightbulb much more often than the CF, and that has to be figured in — but it is much harder to get information on how long bulbs last when they’re being switched on and off than just running all the time.
