CLEAN ENERGY BANKS
Question about engineering internships?

I’m majoring in electrical engineering and will be a junior in the fall. In the mean time, I’m looking for a summer internship. My primary interests are in clean energy systems and RF technology. Are these internship responsibilities adequate to start off with? It’s with an electric utility as a designer.

Position will entail:
-Analysis of distribution circuits to identify voltage and load issues.
-Make recommendations to mitigate load and voltage issues.
-Make recommendations for placement of capacitor banks.
-Analysis of distribution circuits to identify reliability trends.
-Make recommendations to improve sectionalizing capabilities on distribution circuits.

Former Co-ops have assisted in projects like:
-Assisted engineers with solving customer voltage complaints.
-Creation of a training manual.

Almost any internship will give you valuable work place experience.

The description looks fine. In the end interns (or co-ops) are cheap labor. The company gets the benefit of a mostly educated worker for lower pay and the intern gets valuable job experience. Everybody wins. No matter what the description the reality will be different. Companies generally use interns to do whatever needs doing.

Good luck.
