Compressed Natural Gas as an Alternative

Compressed natural gas is considered as a substitute of gasoline  — otherwise known in these terms – petrol, diesel and propane fuel. Compressed natural gas is also referred to as simply CNG, and it has several additional benefits when compared to people who are still using other alternatives. This gas is more environmentally clean compared to other alternatives, as well as the advantate that it is much safer in the event of a spill. This is because natural gas disperses quickly when it is released, and it is also lighter than air. This gives the gas narrow flammability limits. This is extremely beneficial in the vent of a leak — the fuel will dissipate into the air without causing any danger of explosion.

This gas can be used in many different jobs including Otto-cycle and modified diesel cycle engines. The vehicles that use this gas also require a great amount of space for storage for car fuel, as compared to other gasoline-powered vehicles. This is because natural gas is compressed – not a liquid — as is the case with gasoline powered vehicles. You can also cook with compressed natural gas and you can even heat your house. Compressed natural gas has a lot of similarities with liquefied petroleum gas, such as being easy on a car engine by giving the engine a long service life and low maintenance costs.

The cost of compressed natural gas is also the least expensive compared to the other alternative fuels, especially when you compare the equal amounts of fuel energy and the price (which has been very steady over the years). It is important to recognize that this is not applicable to electricity. Compressed natural gas has a vert high octane rating that allows several CNG powered vehicles to use quite a high compression ratio that produces more power than the stock gasoline versions. This power output can go as low as ten percent compared to vehicles with the same engine size that using ‘normal’ gasoline.

The high octane rating of the fuel that comes with compressed natural gas also allows for timing as well as mixture to adjust to enable more efficiency — and, at the same time, not cause detonation or knocking of the engine. CNG is also the most effective fuel for reducing emissions in an engine with internal combustion. Compressed natural gas is the most popular gas in South America, but more and more people are using it now in the United States. There are a number of states in the US where standards have been set up for low emission vehicles, a prime example being California.

In order to meet these standards, you will have to convert to using compressed natural gas powered vehicles. Other standards to be met include the ultra low emission vehicle (ULEV) as well as the super ultra low emission vehicle (SULEV). Some of the vehicles that meet some of these standards include the 1994 Chrysler/Dodge CNG minivans and the CNG Honda Civic GX. There are also several others. It is imperative to research.
