What is the future of algae as a source of clean energy?
Where do you think we will be in regards to the development of tapping algae as an energy source in the next 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?
Algae as rightly pointed out by many contains near about 30% oil and it can be harvested. The rest of the material can be recycled to the ground as fertilizer for the plant. Algae actually converts sunlight energy to chemical energy with the help of carbon dioxide. Both are available plentiful. Only problem is the area required for the growth. This is being addressed by technology. There was an article on this some times ago. Algae is being grown on land in an smaller area with vertical stands. The verticals stands are irrigated with water and the algae they report grows well. The harvest is reported to be economical as well. The consumption of water is still a concern but with drip irrigation they say it can be overcome. Probably genetic modification can help in this area. With all these developments I am pretty sure that algae has a bright future and it is good for the human race.
