What to do when there’s nowhere to go?
I’m living with my bf who I’ve been with for the past 4 years. We met while in the same state but a few years ago he moved to the neighboring state. Last year I moved in with him and he is driving me crazy. He’s a super high energy clean freak who is overly perverted and demeaning. Plus every chance he gets, he puts down my appearance and naggs me to get a better paying job. He loves to criticize my weight when I’m in the avg weight for my size and has no sense of remorse.
I was able to deal with it until now because he worked nights, and I had classes during the day so we didn’t actually see each other much, but he was laid off in February and I graduated in March so the only relief I get is when I’m alone at work. Everyone I know says I should leave but I don’t really have anywhere to go. My family lives across the country. I don’t have friends near me, and I can’t afford a place with my student loans coming due. Plus I have a cat and 2 large fish tanks to take. Any suggestions?
If you can’t afford to leave then you will have to make this work, at least for now (although leaving should be on the goal list). I would look at him and say “I don’t appreciate being put down and until you can advance your behavior a bit – I’m not going to have time to spend with you” and then I would avoid him like the holy plague, saying nothing more to him. The truth is that at some point we all need to become confident enough in ourselves that we no longer care what anyone else thinks. This guy is your chance to get a little practice on that. I’m sorry that he is treating you this way but I think we both know that the criticisms are coming from someone who has greater faults than either of us. Just ignore him, his issues might not be fixed in this lifetime. Best of luck and remember that you are everything that God intended.
