Water being used as alternative fuel?

Chevrolet, and many other car companies are starting to make vehicles that run off of water. Don’t you think it is sad that this was one of the FIRST things used as fuel? It is 2008 and our main fuel source is polluting the atmosphere, and we are going back to one of the most primitive sources of energy ever made. We have the most cutting-edge technology ever made, but the energy used to give it power is slowing killing the planet. Why isnt there more scientists thinking of NEW ways to make power, and not just changing the old ones?
I know where the water is going. What I want to know is why we are deciding to go back to this as fuel when its 2008.

Now let us be careful what we think is happening.
If water is being split into hydrogen and oxygen to power a car, when the car is finished with it, the water is all returned to earth, unchanged.

The amount of energy available to power teh car is far less than the energy needed to split the water, but the water is not being lost.
