Energy Companies Urged To Do More To Publicise Solar
With just a few days to go till the introduction of the new feed in tariff, energy companies are being asked to do more to inform custiomers of the benefits of solar energy. The UK government is probably the last of all countries to introduce a feed in tariff and it is widely expected that the new rate of 41.3p per kW will do much to expand the fledgling solar industry in the UK.
Wayne Morris of the big green company commented “we recently carried out a survey at our solar panel centre in Cheshire and asked customers the following three questions”
1) Are you aware of how solar panels work?
2) Do you know what the payback time is for solar panels?
3) Are you aware of the new feed in tariff?
Of those customers surveyed, the results were:
Answer to question 1 – 5%
Answer to question 2 – 25% answered accurately
Answer to question 3 – 10%
What these results show is that more needs to be done to inform customers of the benefits of solar energy and how the new feed in tariff will work. The big green company says that with some additional publicity there is a real prospect that the solar industry will increase in the UK.
If you look at the impact of a clean energy cashback scheme in other countries, you can see that they can have an impact on the success of solar panels. Next year the government will also introduce the feed in tariff for heat energy. Again this will be set at a rate which should encourage customers to install these type of technologies.
